Winter Exhibition 2021/2022

Animals – Strangers and Friends

Winter Exhibition in the Baroque Hall of the Abbey Library
24 November 2021 to 6 March 2022

Do animals have a soul? Why do dragons appear in so many legends of the saints? Were monks allowed to keep pets? And were there zoos even in the Middle Ages? These and many other questions about animals and humans are answered in the Abbey Library’s Winter Exhibition with the help of manuscripts and prints from the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

Parades and Processions

In her artistic intervention “Parades and Processions”, St Gallen artist Marlies Pekarek offers a completely different view of animals. Inspired by the illumination in the manuscripts, she frames the Baroque Hall with small animals and hybrid creatures made of bronze, plaster, silicone, soap and wax. The animal groupings tell stories, depict metamorphoses and encourage discovery.
