The literature of Roman antiquity is varied, colourful, sensual. Two thousand years later, it still fascinates. During the Middle Ages, it was no different. Ancient texts were copied, read and annotated.
Using these works, the young monks at the monastery of St Gall practised their Latin. What was ideal in terms of style, however, in respect of content did not always correspond to the values that prevailed in the monastery. Using manuscripts and prints dating from the 4th to the 17th century, the exhibition shows how the monks dealt with this situation along with the ancient texts they read in the monastery.
