The digitisation project e-codices was born in 2005 at the University of Freiburg in the form of the pilot project “Digital Abbey Library of St Gall”. The aim of e-codices is to make all medieval and a selection of modern manuscripts in Switzerland freely available in a virtual library. Today, Switzerland’s oldest digital library has become a high-quality, technically innovative research platform supported by robust scholarship, and it enjoys an outstanding reputation in the digital humanities. The finest and most significant Swiss manuscripts can now be found on e-codices, among them the world-famous collection of Carolingian and Ottonian codices in the Abbey Library of St Gall.

The medieval codices in the Abbey Library are digitised using cutting-edge technical equipment to obtain high resolution. Additional information about each manuscript is kept in a database. This has resulted in an innovative tool for codices research designed for the long term and potentially able to integrate any information about the items it contains.
